I've worked for eight companies during my career, including international, national and regional organisations. Whilst working in these various environments I've come accross many differnt types of character, including the archeytypal awkward work colleague. Some people, for a variety of reasons are just harder to deal with than others. A good peice of career advice is not to take their offensiveness personally, you've got to be smarter than that. Always remember to treat business as a game, perhaps a game of chess and don't take it too seriously. If you do it will drive you to distraction. Find out how, over the course of my career I have learned to deal with awkward work colleagues. I've not made lifelong friends of all of them but by trying to understand their perspectives, I've managed to get along with most of them. It's a proven fact that if you are happy at work then this feeling tends to overspill into your private life, Give your career all you've got during work hours, including spending time re-asessing your career options but when you walk out the door do all you can to forget about it.
